On Friday 30th September at 3:47 am (French time), Xavier Macaire and Carlos Manera informed the race directors of the CIC Normandy Channel Race of their decision to retire after the forestay on Class40 Groupe Snef broke. The crew, who were sailing in 5th position in 25 knots of wind and very heavy seas, are fine but extremely disappointed. The boat has been secured and is heading downwind towards a port in northern Brittany.
One of the leaders of the CIC Normandy Channel Race since the start on Sunday 15th September, constantly at the front (2nd at Wolf Rock, 2nd at Tuksar Rock, 1st at Fastnet), Xavier Macaire and Carlos Manera had all the cards in their hand to do well at the finish, scheduled for today, Friday. It’s a huge disappointment to have to retire from the final battle alongside their rivals.
